The Palo Verde Inner City Outing (ICO) trip on June 24-25 2006 was a great success. Six kids from the Mesa CARE Partnership participated in the outing. The group stayed at the Upper Hospital Flats campground in the Coronado National Forest situated at 9,100 feet. Tents were set up, wood gathered, and cooking gear organized. The kids were broken into two teams - one team to help with cooking, the other to wash the dishes. After an excellent dinner, we set up a campfire and the kids roasted marshmallows. Later in the evening, Lisa entertained the kids with songs and word games. Precautions were taken in case bears were in the area before everyone went to bed
The next morning, after a breakfast of scrambled eggs and bagels, camp was completely broken down adn we drove to the Ash Creek trailhead six miles further down the gravel road. This highly senic and well constructed trail started near the Columbine Campground at an elevation of 9,400 feet. We continued past the historic remains of the Mt. Graham Millsite, before hiking on to the "catwalk" and Slickrock falls, our turn around point at 8,200 feet. The round trip distance for the hike was about five miles. The kids were able to view fish in the numerous pools along Ash Creek. After our dayhike, we drove straight back to the CARE center to conclude a very successful ICO trip.
