Big Oil Friends Double Down on Sinema Attacks

Backed by 2.5 Million Donation from Chevron, Boehner's Super PAC Hits the Airwaves in Phoenix, Tempe

Phoenix, AZ -- Today, Arizona organizers for the Sierra Club's Victory Corps called out Republican candidate Vernon Parker on his close ties with a big oil-backed Super PAC, the Congressional Leadership Fund.  The Super PAC just dumped hundreds of thousands of dollars into the Arizona 9th district in an attempt to buy the election out from under the voters of the district.  The Congressional Leadership Fund, Speaker of the House John Boehner's PAC, recently received a $2.5 million dollar donation from Chevron and then proceeded to buy more than $600,000 of air time in the district.

The donation from Chevron is the largest contribution by a publicly traded company to a Super PAC this election cycle.  And much of that money is now aimed at Democrat Kyrsten Sinema, running for Congress in the newly created Arizona 9th Congressional District.  The district comprises portions of Phoenix, Tempe, Mesa and Chandler.  Chevron has donated $3.8 million to candidates and PACs this election cycle making it one of the top 50 donors in the nation according to OpenSecrets.org, and making its $2.5 million donation to Speaker Boehner's PAC one of the largest of the year.  This corporate funding is more than either major political party has spent for their candidates in this race.

“This is a record toxic money spill by a Republican leadership that is bought and paid for by Chevron,” said Sandy Bahr, Grand Canyon Chapter Director for the Sierra Club.  “It's designed to pollute our local election and that's why voters need to show Chevron and Big Oil that Arizona's voters make the decisions in Arizona's elections.”

“We need voices in Congress that are not afraid to challenge Big Oil or its subsidies and who will work to get dirty money like this out of politics,” said Bahr.  “Our air, our water, and our future depend upon it.”

The Congressional Leadership Fund is a Super PAC focused on House races.  Chevron made the contribution on October 7th – it represents a large share of the money raised the past month by this Super PAC.   The Congressional Leadership Fund pumped the $600,000 into the race to defeat Kyrsten Sinema and elect Vernon Parker late last week.  The ads it purchased started running today.
